Opis wydawcy
Atlas History of Polish Jews is the first of its kind book, which comprehensively presents the history of the Jewish people on Polish soil since the arrival of the first Jews in our country until today. The novelty of the book is such that, e.g. the maps, diagrams and charts play an equal role as the text narrative. They were conceived especially for this publication, and in the future will also appear in exhibitions of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews. The content is complemented by a rich iconography (images, photos, including fragments of documents).
The book was written in collaboration with the Museum of the History of the Jews, and the Jewish Historical Institute. The authors of the texts are the most prominent experts in the field of the history of Jews on Polish soil. Atlas shows not only the age-old history of the Jewish community in the Polish lands, but also its unique and very rich record of their broad culture, as well as the obvious merits and significant contribution to the treasury of Polish culture.
The book consists of an introductory part, which shows the origins and culture of the Jewish state in antiquity and the diaspora, and the movement of Jews to central and eastern Europe, as well as of the subsequent seven chapters chronologically narrating the history of Jews:
- In medieval Poland
- During the "golden age" of Jewish settlement in Poland, i.e. in the sixteenth century and the first half of the seventeenth century,
- During the difficult and even tragic times of the mid-seventeenth century and the eighteenth century,
- Over the Partitions period,
- In the Second Republic,
- Over the hardest trial period of the Holocaust during World War II, and
- Finally, over the postwar period.
