More than a few PBS subscribers threaten to yank their support when the British TV film The Naked Civil Servant was first offered to American viewers in the spring of 1975. Fortunately, many others were willing to see beyond the film's controversial subject matter and revel in the excellence of the production and its participants; one of the film's biggest and most influential fans was none other than Milton Berle. Based on Quentin Crisp's autobiography, the film stars John Hurt as Crisp, who publicly declared his homosexuality at a time when this alternate lifestyle was still an offense punishable by imprisonment in Great Britain. The material is handled with taste, discretion, and a generous supply of humor; how anyone could be offended by this is problematic, but remember that there was a different world out there in 1975. The music of The Naked Civil Servant is supplied by Carl Davis, best known for his symphonic silent-movie resoration scores.
