Eliza Orzeszkowa, born as Eliza Pawłowska, was a prominent Polish novelist associated with the Positivism movement during the period of foreign Partitions of Poland. Recognized as one of the most outstanding writers of her time, she was also a nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905, sharing this distinction with other notable literary figures. Her work is characterized by a deep engagement with social issues and a realistic portrayal of Polish society.

Her literary career was marked by a prolific output of around 30 novels, 120 sketches, dramas, and novellas, exploring themes such as social conditions, national identity, and the relationships between different communities within Poland. Among her most renowned works are "Nad Niemnem," a monumental novel often compared to Adam Mickiewicz's "Pan Tadeusz," which depicts the Polish aristocracy and social order against the backdrop of political upheaval. Other notable titles include "Eli Makower," which examines Jewish-Polish relations, and "Meir Ezofowicz," highlighting conflicts between Jewish orthodoxy and liberalism.
